Sparking a reader’s interest

Sparking a reader’s interest

Sharing is caring!

Something I know that’s true is that everyone has a complex life. Even the characters you create. They just aren’t parents, children, but family. Family is the first thing that gives a character their worldview and desires. I could go on, but how do you encourage your readers to want to know more about a character? Let’s face it, you won’t know anything about your reader. You can’t explain a character fully in their first introduction. It’s not an impossible task.

For this blog, I will suggest one simple technique. Let one of your characters arouse your reader’s curiosity. Have them suggest there is something curious about the new character. It can be as simple as this – “There was something about the man or woman at first glance that suggested they were in deep thought and not totally aware of their surroundings.” The character who had this thought might be at an airport picking up this person, knowing nothing about them. You have tweaked the reader’s interest. How you go from there is entirely up to you. You could give your reader a reason why the person is not totally aware immediately, or you could let the characters talk and reveal more about them slowly.

Think about the scenario. Which method would you choose? Why would you choose it?

” I am a writer and as a writer, I do not neatly fit into any category. I have written magazine articles, feature news articles, restaurant reviews, a newspaper column, and several book length nonfiction projects aimed at people interested in particular health problems for foundations and companies. As to novels, I have published some Kindle novels.”
