Everyone agrees that the war in Ukraine threatens the whole world. I hear people saying they hope someone in Russia kills Putin. I did, too, until I realized that Russia has no way for someone to logically pick a successor to Putin. Before, the old Soviet Union had mechanisms to choose a successor. Putin is a dictator. He won’t allow anyone to be thought of as a successor. For someone to succeed Putin, he or she would have to be ruthless. They would risk everything in the attempt to eliminate Putin.
I am not sure that we want someone that ruthless in charge of one of the most extensive collections of nuclear weapons. If he uses atomic weapons, Putin knows that that will end up in his demise one way or another. Someone ruthless enough to kill Putin might very well be willing to risk the use of nuclear weapons. Think of it this way. You have to be more than a little bit crazy to dispose of a dictator and take his place.
