I seem to have stirred up some people. I wish they were a bit more creative in their name-calling, but that’s neither here nor there. I want to turn to politics. The Republican Party seems to be in a mess. They appear as divided as the country is right now.
On the one hand, there are the Trump Loyalists, and on the other hand, a group, I would call Reagan Loyalists. The party seems to be frozen in place and what they’re doing makes no sense. The economic stimulus bill was passed without any Republican support. All polls showed that the country was more than 70% in favor of passing that bill. That makes no sense. Why would you vote against the will of 70% of the country? I’m not sure that it’s possible to explain those votes. The only explanation I can find is the split within the party.
A Republican Party so divided is a disaster. We need both healthy Republican and Democratic parties. The give-and-take between the parties prevents us from going too far in either direction. Can we take a step back for a moment and look at the political scene. The political news coming out of Georgia is about making sure that fewer minorities vote in coming elections. Like the vote against the stimulus bill, it makes as much sense as grilling hamburgers in the middle of a blizzard. There are other examples of craziness around the country too numerous to mention.
There has to be a solution to the divide in the party. At the moment, there is no one trying to bring the two sides together within the party. I don’t hear or read about discussions between the two factions within the party. It seems to be at the moment like the old expression, “It’s my way or the highway.” We can’t let the Republican Party tear itself apart. We can’t solve their internal differences, but we can urge them to start talking to each other and find their points of agreement. It can be as simple as the love of country. I can see many points of agreement the factions of the Republican Party share. I hope they can see them too. There is a great folk saying, “Heal thine self.”
Let’s pray that they do!
