My last post, -33°F this morning, brought some comments and emails. I think it was my comments that should’ve been a bit lower in temperature. Let me explain. When I moved back to Minnesota in 1979, the weather was definitely colder in the winter. I remember a two-week stretch where the temperature never got above zero. The highest temperatures were in the -15°F to the -20°F range during that time. At another time, I remember a temperature of -55°F. That was unusual enough for me to take a cup of boiling water and throw it up in the air. It made a huge cloud. I also blew up a balloon and took it outside, and as it cooled the balloon shriveled up. I think it was in the same cold snap that -60°F temperatures were recorded elsewhere in the state.
The temperature this morning is +8°F, with occasional snow showers. There is a wind with occasional gusts that make the windchill below zero. All in all, it is a pleasant February morning in northern Minnesota.
