Peeping Tom? No just a bear.

Peeping Tom? No just a bear.

The bears are just out of hibernation and very hungry. They’re looking everywhere for anything to eat. Older homes and trailer houses aren’t as tight as recently built homes. It means a bear could smell something cooking or smell a lingering odor if you cooked something recently. I am sure that is why our neighbors found a bear looking into their bedroom window. It was hungry and not interested in what might be going on.

Several years back, a friend of ours heard a bear trying to break through the door of her trailer house. She went and got her deer rifle and shot the bear through the door. That meant she had no way to get out of her home. The DNR had to come and remove the bear before she could leave for work.

When I was younger and open dumps were common, some bears would hang around the dump. This time of year, if you went to the dump, you would be sure to have one grocery bag of food scraps, and you would throw that out first so the bears wouldn’t be right next to you as you unloaded your car. They always seem to argue over anything to eat. Their fights would often start with one bear swatting the other. The sound of that swat made you realize how powerful they were.

Luckily, they are only aggressive around food or a mother guarding her cub. We have black bears here, and generally, they are shy.
