Why are people spreading misinformation?

Sharing is caring!

I have been chatting recently with a friend. We have known each other for years. He is very conservative in everything, including politics. Our recent discussions began with the reasons he chose not to get vaccinated against Covid 19. He is well educated and even has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. I asked him to send me some of the links he had that were promoting not getting vaccinated. At first glance, most of them seem to hold together logically, but further examination showed they all had errors in logic.

For example, one article pointed out that if you got your vaccination using the Moderna vaccine, you were exposed to the entire genetic profile of the Covid 19 virus. That used to be true about all vaccines, but the Moderna vaccine uses a different method. If you’re like me and got your education many years ago, you probably would never heard of mRNA. It stands for “messenger RNA.” RNA does many things, but “messenger RNA,” tells cells how to make a particular protein. The mRNA in the Moderna vaccine gives instructions on how to make the spike on the outside of the Covid 19 virus and nothing more. In other words, the Moderna vaccine does not expose you to the entire genetic profile of the Covid 19.

The article’s author either did not know what mRNA is or was deliberately misleading anyone reading the article. I don’t understand why anyone would deliberately mislead someone about a lifesaving vaccine. I sent my friend a couple of links that describe what mRNA does and how the Moderna vaccine is made. It’s likely not to change his mind because all he has heard is the danger of the current vaccines. It is a case where the truth cannot correct the dishonesty of an article plus many more. This dishonesty has the potential to take innocent people’s lives!

” I am a writer and as a writer, I do not neatly fit into any category. I have written magazine articles, feature news articles, restaurant reviews, a newspaper column, and several book length nonfiction projects aimed at people interested in particular health problems for foundations and companies. As to novels, I have published some Kindle novels.”
