Someone sent me an email suggesting the events in Washington and their aftermath would make for great stories. I have to agree. News reports say that some of the organizations that appear responsible for Congress’s storming have turned against the president because he denies them. That has the makings of a betrayal story. A person acts how they believe they are expected to by a superior person only to find the superior denies telling them anything. A similar storyline would be that the person acting as the superior suggested is in trouble with the law because of it. This trouble with the law would bring all sorts of adverse problems for the person.
I am sure you’ve heard of the phrase “writers’ block.” I get many ideas from news broadcasts or written articles. The news is a resource for any writer. Think of the news stories of car accidents, fires, home invasions, and so on. People like to read about things they see reflected in everyday life. Using any one of the daily news stories provides that. We are in the midst of winter here. It snowed overnight. The roads will be slick this morning, and the temperatures are well below zero. There are stories because the slippery roads caused an accident and affect the lives of two families. It might also be a survival story. The car had a mechanical failure, or it slid into a ditch, leaving the occupants in frigid weather with the possibility of death if they can’t get help.
As you can see, there are all sorts of solutions to “writers’ block.” If you find yourself without a story, turn on the news. You will soon have more stories than you can ever use.
