Regardless of what party you prefer, don’t most politicians play loose with the truth? One party said that you shouldn’t appoint a new Supreme Court justice in the year when there is a presidential election. However, four years later, they came up with all kinds of excuses why it’s okay to a point a new Supreme Court justice just a week away from a presidential election. I don’t believe we can trust what most politicians say. It doesn’t matter what party. If it suits them, they’ll lie. It’s not a new problem. Mark Twain said, “Look at the tyranny of party — at what is called party allegiance, party loyalty — a snare invented by designing men for selfish purposes.” The founders of our country didn’t want political parties. Unfortunately, they came about because of human nature – “I don’t care what you want because I am in charge now. I’ll do whatever I want.” Our founders thought the purpose of government was to provide for the good of the people. However, as parties emerged, it became my party will save the country while your party will destroy it. I think it is the fixation on a single goal that is dangerous. Look back to the Civil War we fought – the single goal was to preserve slavery from the southern point of view, and from the northern point of view, it was to eliminate slavery.
There were brave and honest men who have been politicians. Somehow they seem to be in the past. There was John McCain and from my state, Hubert Humphrey. We can hope and pray more will be elected next week.
