It was -33°F this morning when I got up. That’s not unusual in northern Minnesota, but temperatures should be a bit lower this time year in the -40°F range. Our winters are definitely getting warmer. When it gets colder, everything shrinks. It’s just a law of physics and there’s nothing we can do about it. That means your house makes funny noises. Most of them sound like someone has taken a hammer and hit something solid like a rafter or floor joist. The other sounds are like somebody knocking at your door but only once or twice and most. In other houses I’ve lived in during these cold stretches, there would be a sound like someone moaning. It would be enough to make you think the house is haunted. I thought you might enjoy reading about the strange noises our houses make here in the cold north.
