Billy first meets Florence when he is in graduate school. Florence is working on her Ph.D. and Billy is working on his Master’s degree. Earl owns a construction business. Florence is the one that convinces Billy to call Sam, Samantha, even though Billy distrusts all women after Jill. You might call Florence a matchmaker because she brings Billy and Sam together. Florence helps Billy once again when after graduating with his master’s degree, Billy cannot find any work in his field and is forced to become a long-haul trucker. Florence recommends Billy for a job in the company she works for. Throughout the rest of the novel Florence and Earl get together with Billy and Sam as frequently as they can.
