Ralph Johnson is Billy’s father. When the novel opens, he is a widower. During the time Billy is in the army, Ralph starts to date Sally Henderson who is also a widower. Shortly after Billy gets home, Ralph announces that he is going to marry Sally. Billy serves as the best man for his father at the wedding. Also, at the wedding, Billy meets Jill. Much to everyone’s surprise because of her and Ralph’s ages Sally gets pregnant. Ralph realizes he must have a steadier source of income and goes to work in the paper mill. Sally has a baby girl and they name her Wendy. Wendy serves as an older sister to Billy’s children.
