Politicians as actors

Politicians as actors

Sharing is caring!

I watched part of the impeachment vote in the House of Representatives. It was clear both sides were very aware that what they were saying would be recorded and be part of history. They all carefully read from a prepared text – at least all those I saw. I watched for a while until it became clear there was nothing new to be said from either side. However, I did notice something. I had always thought politicians were good actors. I’m not sure of that after watching the impeachment vote. Let me give you an example from both sides. From the supporters of the president, one on a member was supposed to be outraged from what he was saying, but it was delivered with all smiles. From the other side, the text representative was reading was all about the solemnity of the moment. However, he too was all smiles and a few laughs. In both cases, their demeanor conflicted with the words they were delivering. Do you remember Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar: Act III, scene two? Anthony is at Caesar’s funeral. His speech starts out something like this, “I come to bury Caesar and not to praise him.” Anthony then goes on to use this line many times, “Brutus is an honorable man.” You know listening to the speech that Brutus is not honorable. Going back to the impeachment vote, I think our politicians could use some theater training. Perhaps then their delivery of lines for history would not conflict with their demeanor. Apparently, politicians are not the good actors I thought they were! What do you think?
