Question – how close are you to completing another novel?

Sharing is caring!

I received an email asking if I had a novel nearing completion. I’m about 15,000 words from completing the first draft of a mystery intertwined with the love story. Publishers want a one or two-sentence description of the novel. I hate reducing a story to a couple of sentences. They often become the starting point for the little blurb you see on the back cover of the novel. Here is the two-sentence description of this novel – “A young man returns home after his brother’s murder to take over a family business that is slowly going downhill. He searches for the murderer while trying to save the business and finds himself falling in love.” The setting is in the current day someplace in northern Minnesota. The business is a newspaper business. It is being hurt badly by the Internet, and our hero has to find a way to return it to a viable business. An editorial his brother published in the paper may have been the cause of his murder. Jim, our hero, finds the paper takes more of his time that he’d rather devote to solving his brother’s murder. Obviously, there is much more than this short description of the novel.

She, the writer of the email,  asked when I expect to complete the novel. I find the best time for writing is before lunch each day. I shoot for somewhere between 1000 and 1500 words. There are days when I exceeded my goal. I have had 5000 word days, but on the other hand, I have struggled to make 500 words on different days. In the afternoon, I do minor editing of those words. I use a dictation program. It makes some hilarious mistakes, so that’s that is all I do in my editing in the afternoon. An example of the dictation program’s errors that I remember is, “They went snaking.” When it should’ve been, “They went skating.” The program has taught me to try and be very careful with my pronunciation of words – grin! After the novel is completed, I do the majority of the editing. That can take a month or two. If it goes to a traditional publisher, it will take at least another year before it sees print. If it’s published as a Kindle novel, it will only take a couple of months before it’s available.

I want to thank the author wrote the email with this question. I hope I satisfied her curiosity and yours.

  7. Hi! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any issues with hackers?
My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing a few months of hard work due to no data backup.
Do you have any methods to protect against hackers?

    1. I have two suggestions. Get a password manager that generates passwords. Use one of the many backup programs available.

” I am a writer and as a writer, I do not neatly fit into any category. I have written magazine articles, feature news articles, restaurant reviews, a newspaper column, and several book length nonfiction projects aimed at people interested in particular health problems for foundations and companies. As to novels, I have published some Kindle novels.”
