What does your conscience say?

Sharing is caring!

I hear this question every now and then, “Doesn’t matter if I vote?” I will often turn the question around and ask in reply, “What do you think?” It doesn’t matter what the country’s underlying philosophy is. There are basically two underlying groups, liberal and conservative. Let’s look at Iran. It is a conservative theocracy. The form of government is based on religion, Islam. They have police who enforce religious beliefs. Iran is an extreme case of conservatism. There are countries where there seems to be no political understanding. An example of that is Haiti. It’s a country where anarchy rules.

The United States is currently considered a liberal democracy. It is a democracy because everyone has the right to vote and express their opinion. It is considered liberal because it accepts groups like the LGBTQ community. The Republican Party has always been considered conservative, while the Democratic Party has always been considered liberal. That has worked well for the past 246 years. The upcoming election in November may well decide if the United States will endure for another 246 years. A segment of the Republican Party has chosen to be ultraconservative. A person is considered conservative if they do not like change. They would like a government that enforces the rule of no change. It’s a government that is not democratic with a small “d.” This small group feels it’s okay to use force to make sure there is no change. We saw this feeling on January 6.

There has always been a small group in both parties that would rather eliminate democracy so their views would always predominate. Unfortunately, a group within the Republican Party is willing to do anything to have their views by any means possible. There are many things that we could vote on in the upcoming elections ranging from rising prices to abortion. There is one thing above all the rest. It is our democracy. We cannot let part of one political party destroy our democracy. It may not be easy this year to vote. A vote for the Republican Party is a vote against democracy. You have two choices. You can vote against the Republican Party or you can choose not to vote to demonstrate your fear of where the party is heading.

It is up to you. I have never seen in my 80 years such a clear threat to our country.

  1. I do not agree totally with your definition of conservative.
My definition includes adherence to the US Constitution which I strongly believe is not being following by the liberal Democratic Party nor by the current president.
Biden does nothing to protect the southern border from foreigners invading this Republic nor protecting against all the illicit drugs that pour across the southern border.
Democratic mayors and district attorneys do not obey the “rule of law” in order to protect citizens against the current crime wave.
I believe in both the 1st and 2nd Amendment as well.

    1. Rob,
I live in the country on a dead-end dirt road. In my local travels, I have seen just two Democratic signs but many Republican signs. When I talk to my neighbors, they feel that the Democratic Party has abandoned them. That’s the party for big city folk. There’s also a strong feeling that we are losing “our” country to minorities, from Blacks to LTBQ communities. They see other policies aimed at their way of life. If you went to any of my neighbor’s homes, you would find a deer rifle, a shotgun, a 22 to protect the garden from things like groundhogs and gophers, and perhaps a handgun. I grew up with firearms as a tool to provide food, just as a hoe was used for the same purpose. They see all the mass shootings, which confirms their belief that cities have gone crazy.

What I was trying to say in my blog is there is an extreme danger in losing our democracy. All the political points you make are very valid. The southern borders have always been a problem. If you look up the number of the legal aliens crossing the southern border by President, you will see it’s always been a problem with even President Reagan having more crossings than today’s president. It’s a horrible problem and all due to failed governments in South and Central America. I live short drive from the northern border and just this last week they caught 11 illegal aliens trying to sneak across the border. They were from Ireland. I think borders will always be a problem because our country has much to offer. We often don’t realize that. If you want to see why I’d be worried about our democracy, look up Hungary’s current leader Victor Orban.
